Sword Art Online -Progressive- to Make North American Premiere in February

Nov 20, 2022 · 7

Sword Art Online -Progressive- Scherzo of Deep Night has received a release window for its North American theatrical debut.

The sequel to 2021's Aria of a Starless Night will debut sometime in February 2023. The announcement occurred during the Sword Art Online panel at this year's Aniplex of America, and the information came with a new English-dubbed trailer, which confirms the returns of Cherami Leigh (Fairy Tail) and Bryce Papenbrook (Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba) as Asuna and Kirito respectively. Haruka Tomatsu (Uncle from Another World) and Yoshitsugu Matsuoka (Food Wars! Shokugeki no Soma) have also reprised their roles as the leading pair in the Japanese version of Scherzo of Deep Night.

Based on the Sword Art Online -Progressive- light novels by Reki Kawahara, the movie series greatly expands upon the events of the "Aincrad" story arc, depicting what occurred on individual floors of the deadly video game. Scherzo of Deep Night introduces viewers to the fifth floor, a giant mazelike ruin. The narrative sees Asuna and Kirito adventuring together in an attempt to find equipment and information that can help the vanguard defeat the level's boss. While many of the trailers for Scherzo of Deep Night promise a story full of intense combat and brutal emotions, one piece of promotional artwork teases moments of levity between the two leads.

The sequel movie premiered in Japan on Oct. 22. Scherzo of Deep Night was originally scheduled to premiere on Sept. 10, but the movie experienced delays due to the resurgence of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the country.

The Works of Reki Kawahara

A-1 Pictures, the studio behind Aria of a Starless Night, which went on to earn an impressive box office of $14.03 million, produced the sequel. Several members of the creative team returned to work on Scherzo of Deep Night, including chief director Ayako Kono (The Seven Deadly Sin the Movie: Prisoners of the Sky), animation director Kento Toya (Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans) and composer Yuki Kajiura (The Case Study of Vanitas).

Fans of Kawahara's work have more to be excited about than just the upcoming North American debut of Scherzo of Deep Night. The writer recently released a new light novel series, titled Demon's Crest. It follows teenage video game beta testers who find their reality merging with the virtual reality fantasy MMO, Actual Magic.

Kawahara's Progressive light novels are distributed in English by Yen Press. The original Sword Art Online anime is available to stream on Hulu and Crunchyroll.
