Pokémon Scarlet and Violet have finally arrived, and with them, loads of trainers are looking to climb their way to the top of the Paldean Pokémon League. Gain, as they say, is only accomplished through pain. In real life, one can only become a champion through hours of grueling work. In Pokémon, however, there are numerous shortcuts to the top.
The most effective shortcuts are focused on Pokémon with high XP yields -- those who give a lot of XP when they're knocked out. Continuously farming these Pokémon is by far the quickest way to gain levels, and thanks to integrated XP sharing, a whole party can benefit from a single, tight training setup.
Getting A Lucky Egg
Introduced all the way back in Pokémon Gold, Silver, & Crystal, the Lucky Egg is a held item that boosts the XP gain rate of its holder by 50%. It appears to be a Chansey egg, which is appropriate, considering Chansey has one of the highest experience yields of any Pokémon.
Thankfully, obtaining the Lucky Egg is easy. Simply defeat five gym leaders and collect their badges. Jacq, the Biology teacher from Naranja (or Uva) Academy will then appear to grant you the egg. The XP bonus from the Lucky Egg, while it may not seem like much, really adds up over time. It's particularly noticeable when combined with the other XP training methods we're about to discuss.
Simple XP Training With Forretress
For the best possible training in the game, you'll want to start setting up sandwiches and farming Chansey. However, there's an alternative method that does not require sandwiches. In the far north of Paldea, north of Casseroya Lake, is a place called Socarrat Trail. Along this trail is a small pond which is constantly filled with the Pokémon Forretress.
Not only is Forretress relatively easy to KO, it rewards a fairly high XP yield. It's not nearly as rewarding as Chansey, but considering the sheer number of naturally occurring Forretress in this pond, it's a solid training spot.
We recommend using Skeledirge to train here. Forretress has a quadruple weakness to Fire, and though its ability Sturdy gives it some survivability, this weakness is easy to exploit. Furthermore, Skeledirge's Ghost typing allows it to completely avoid Explosion -- a move Forretress tosses off from time to time.
Making Ham Sandwiches
The meal power from this sandwich will boost your encounter rate for Normal-type Pokémon, including the notorious Chansey. First, you'll want to fly to Mesagoza West. From the Pokémon Center, turn around and run across the circular courtyard. Head into the shop Sure Cans -- it's the red one on the right. Once inside, buy some Pickles. Next, leave the shop and turn right. Two shops over from Sure Cans is Artisan Bakery. It's the one with the green and white awning. Here, buy some Ham, some Mayonnaise, and some Mustard.
Now leave Mesagoza, set up a picnic, and approach the picnic table. Choose to make a sandwich, and scroll down to number eighty -- the Ham Sandwich. Be careful when laying out your ingredients. If you misplace a single pickle, you'll be left with an unsatisfying meal.
Amazing XP Farming With Chansey
As mentioned, Chansey is revered by Pokémon fans for its outstanding XP yields. In previous games, "Chansey farming" has been the universally agreed-upon method for leveling up as fast as possible. As it turns out, it's no different in Scarlet & Violet. While there are no areas in Paldea where Chansey appears naturally in large numbers, you can draw them near using the powers of the Ham Sandwich.
After chowing down, fly to the North Province (Area Three) and head down to the green beach area with the Team Star base. With the meal power, you'll start to see lots of Chansey regularly wandering around this area. It's recommend to use a Ghost-type Pokémon to take them on, since Chansey's Normal typing leaves it struggling to touch Ghost-types.
The effects of the sandwich will last for half an hour, which is more than enough time to farm tons of XP. Keep in mind that you can always hit Right on the D-pad to view your active meal powers, as well as how much time you have remaining until they run out. Using this method, you can farm Chansey for effectively as long as you like, resulting in amazing gains.
