Phil Spencer Says He Is Willing To Keep Call Of Duty On PlayStation Long-Term

Nov 15, 2022 · 21

Well-known Head of the Xbox brand, Phil Spencer, recently sat down with The Verge to, yet again, discuss the never-ending topic of Call of Duty's future on PlayStation, were Microsoft to acquire the game's publisher, Activision Blizzard. He attempted to remove as much doubt as possible from his previous statements, assuring that there are no caveats and "nothing hidden" to Xbox's intent to keeping Call of Duty on PlayStation.

Microsoft, Xbox's parent company, has committed to spending $68.7 billion to purchase Activision, but the deal is currently under scrutiny from market regulators, particularly in the UK and EU regions. Some of the regulators' concerns specifically involve Call of Duty, as they believe there is a legitimate possibility that the game eventually becomes an Xbox exclusive.

According specifically to the UK regulators, an exclusive Call of Duty "would impact Sony's ability to compete with Microsoft." Since Microsoft and Xbox definitely want the deal to go through, it behooves them to assure the gaming world that Call of Duty will not be an Xbox exclusive.

Spencer had previously explained that he'd told PlayStation directly that Xbox was committed to keeping Call of Duty there for "several years." PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan later revealed that the deal was only for three years and called it "inadequate." Spencer has already claimed that Microsoft's intent is to keep on shipping Call of Duty to PlayStation indefinitely regardless, but some fans seem to think this is just a false promise and that Xbox could easily change its tune once the three-year agreement reaches its end.

Spencer contends that this isn't the case. "It’s not about at some point I pull the rug underneath PlayStation 7’s legs," he stated, "and it's 'ahaha you just didn't write the contract long enough'. There's no contract that could be written that says forever." There is credence to the notion that an eternally binding agreement is not a very feasible thing, given how impossible it is to account for unpredictable factors that could prop up ten, twenty, or even thirty years in the future.

Spencer goes on to say that writing a contract with the word "forever" is "a bit silly," but he says that Xbox is willing "to make a longer-term commitment that Sony would be comfortable with and that regulators would be comfortable with." He then clears up that it's "native Call of Duty," not bound by streaming or needing to have Game Pass on PlayStation, and he reaffirms that there's nothing hidden. "We want to continue to ship Call of Duty on PlayStation without any kind of weird ‘aha I figured out the gotcha'."
