My Hero Academia Fan Artists Get Stamp of Approval From Series Creator

Nov 21, 2022 · 16

A My Hero Academia contest for fan art has the author of the series screaming, "Plus ultra!"

The results of the 7th JUMP Universal Illustration Contest are in, and Kōhei Horikoshi let the fan artists know just how impressive their submissions are. Hosted by medibang.com, creators who submitted their original work or a colored pre-drawn illustration could win up to 100,000 yen, My Hero Academia materials and an autographed drawing by Horikoshi. Out of over 3,000 submissions, seven were chosen with one of those being the special winner to receive the grand prize.

Horikoshi left comments on each of the winning submissions, noting what set the pieces apart from the rest and impressed them. The special winner's submission was a colorful rendition of Deku and All Might standing back to back in a storm of colors. The manga artist praised the submission, writing "I'm impressed by the way the colors of lights are united well although you used so many colors in this artwork!" They continued, "I don't think I can ever draw a masterpiece like this."

The selected winners for the original fan art submissions each had different subjects as their chosen pieces. One shows off a young Deku and Bakugo drawing on a chalkboard. Mei Hatsume is the subject of another, and she is depicted as lounging on the floor of some kind of industrial setting with a reticle design overlayed on the photo. The reticle matches the design of her quirk aka superpower, Zoom, which gives her the ability to see much farther than the average person. The final selected winner of this group drew a collage of the League of Villains in dark, ominous tones. Tomura Shigaraki, in particular, looms large over the group in this piece.

The three special winners from the coloring section of the contest were each picked from a list of pre-selected drawings. MHA's mangaka praised the artists for their use of bold colors to bring the drawings to life. However, one of the winners slightly altered their chosen drawing. They added flowers in the frame of Deku, Bakugo and Shigaraki being enveloped in the disembodied hands of a suited figure. Horikoshi did call out the deviation and failure to follow the rules, but they ultimately approved of the artist's addition to it.

New chapters of My Hero Academia are released weekly by Weekly Shōnen Jump.
