Japan’s Blue Lock-inspired Uniforms Thrill Anime Fans After Winning Match

Nov 25, 2022 · 8

Japan's team had the power of Blue Lock on its side in its stunning victory against the four-time champion Germany in the World Cup.

After trailing behind Germany by one goal, Japan pulled off a shocking upset in the second half, scoring two goals within eight minutes of each other. As reported by HITC, soccer fans found themselves floored by Japan's win, with many saying that they had "the power of anime by their side." It turns out that Blue Lock's artist Yusuke Nomura had previously illustrated the protagonist Isagi wearing the same uniform Japan's national team is donning.

Earlier this year, Nomura and Giant Killing's artist Masaya Tsunamoto collaborated to draw their respective main characters wearing the national team's uniform. The uniforms used the concept of origami, with the lines intersecting to create paper cranes. The home game uniforms are blue, while the away game uniforms are white with the origami design primarily on the sleeves, the red and blue colors superimposed to create a 3-D effect. Origami is a symbol of prayer that delivers both joy and victory.

Blue Lock’s Artist Congratulated Japan for the Win

Upon witnessing Japan's victory, the official Blue Lock anime account tweeted, "Awesome!!!! Ego!!!" Nomura posted a new Blue Lock illustration featuring Isagi pumping his fist in triumph to celebrate Japan's win. Fans couldn't help but draw parallels from Takumi Asano's game-winning goal to the soccer manga. Pinned by the German player Nico Schlotterbec, forcing Asano further away from the goal, it didn't look like he had any room to score. Instead of passing it to a teammate, Asano kicks and smashes the ball straight into the upper right corner, finding nothing but net.

That aggressive style of playing may be familiar to Blue Lock fans. In the story, after Japan finished a disappointing 16th at the 2018 FIFA World Cup, the Japanese Football Union hired Ego Jinpachi to cultivate a team strong enough to win the World Cup in the next cycle. Jinpachi plans to enact the Blue Lock program, where he has hand-picked 300 players from around the country to train. However, only one of them can represent Japan's striker. To prove it, they need to show that they can only think about themselves and being the best -- an egotist. Written by Muneyuki Kaneshiro and illustrated by Yusuke Nomura, Blue Lock received an anime adaptation produced by Eight Bit. The manga has been recommended by numerous mangaka such as Attack on Titan's Hajime Isayama and Aoashi's Yūgo Kobayashi.

The World Cup runs from Nov. 20 to Dec. 18, with Japan playing its next match against Costa Rica on Nov. 27. The first seven episodes of Blue Lock are available on Crunchyroll.
