God of War Ragnarok is finally here for everyone to enjoy. With beautiful landscapes, deep characters, fantastic puzzles, and bombastic boss fights. You’ll find a lot to love during your time with the game. This guide focuses on Atreus and Angrboda’s encounter with Gryla, Angrboda’s grandmother, who has been capturing the souls of wild animals in the Ironwood.
Like all of the boss fights in the game, there’s a wonderful mix of challenge and fun on display here. In addition to that, this boss fight mixes things up by having you take on an oversized opponent. It’s a fight that feels epic from start to finish because of how small Angrboda and Atreus are compared to the fierce Gryla.
Gryla will throw projectiles from her pot. These are usually fairly slow attacks that should be easily avoidable. Some of them are accompanied by a yellow ring, meaning they will break your block and potentially leave you vulnerable to more attacks.
Orbs will also occasionally come out of Gryla’s cauldron and follow you. These can be shot down with your arrows. You want to take care of them because they will continue to follow you around the room.
Move Between Levels
When the ground flashes red, Gryla is about to poison whichever level you’re on. As soon as you see this, you need to move. If you’re on the countertop of the kitchen, you need to get to the ground as fast as possible. Do not jump from one side of the countertop to the next, as both of them will be poisoned. If you’re on the ground, you need to move quickly to get up onto the countertop. This is a devastating attack, and you don’t want to be caught by it.
Aim For The Cauldron
Throughout the entirety of the fight, the way to hurt Gryla is to hurt her magical Cauldron. You’ll always want to strike at one of the glowing runes with your arrows. Once you’ve hit the Cauldron enough times, Gryla will drop to the ground with it. This is your chance to move into melee range and hit the Cauldron up close.
Ignite The Candles
As the fight continues, you’ll need to get Gryla to follow you between two candles. Once she’s near a candle, use Angrboda to trigger the candle and stun Gryla, allowing you an opening to damage the Cauldron. Once you’re near the end of Gryla’s health, she’ll drop to the ground, and you’ll be prompted to destroy the cauldron by repeatedly tapping X. Once you’ve done this, the cauldron will be destroyed, and you’ll trigger a cutscene.
