EXCLUSIVE: Mark Millar Has a ‘Huge’ Superman Project He Wants to Make

Nov 19, 2022 · 17

Mark Millar has had his time writing Superman, but the Kick-Ass and Wanted creator says he has some stories left in him regarding DC's flagship character, should DC have any interest.

"Oh, that itch never goes away," Millar told CBR, in reference to the writer’s iconic Superman: Red Son series. "If you grow up loving stuff, that never disappears. I've done a lot of big Marvel books, but Superman: Red Son was the only time I got to cut loose in the sandbox at DC, so I always have ideas and have two big folders filled with DC stuff."

Created by Millar and Dave Johnson, DC published the three-issue Superman: Red Son series in 2003 as part of the company's then-active Elseworlds imprint. The story focused on a reality where baby Kal-El's rocket ship landed in the Soviet Union's Ukraine, rather than in Smallville, Kansas. Superman, in turn, became a Soviet hero, championing socialism and Soviet expansionism.

"Shooting schedules over the next couple of years mean I can't, but I have a huge Superman project I want to talk to DC about down the line," Millar said. "I'd want someone amazing on the art like Olivier Coipel or Pepe Larraz. Just one of those amazing guys, or I'd just hold it back. But I want to do at least one of these things at some point. I'm bursting to do something like that and would take a few months to have fun with it."

Mark Millar - Beyond Superman: Red Son

The acclaimed Superman: Red Son was nominated for an Eisner Award and became one of DC's most notable non-canonical realities, with the world of Red Son even earning a spot in DC's various incarnations of its multiverse. Warner Bros. released a Red Son animated adaptation of the series in 2020.

Prior to Red Son, Millar also had a stint on Superman Adventures in the late '90s, set in the continuity of Superman: The Animated Series, airing around that time. Millar also wrote for DC's Wildstorm imprint, taking over for The Authority co-creator Warren Ellis after his run on that title in 2000.

Following his tenure at DC, Millar went on to Marvel to pen some of that publisher's best known recent storylines, including The Ultimates, Old Man Logan and Civil War. All became foundations for subsequent films for Marvel Studios' Avengers and 20th Century Fox's X-Men franchises. In 2003, Millar launched his Millarworld label as a home for his creator-owned projects.
