Previously known as Square Enix Montreal, Onoma Studios has announced today via Twitter that some of its mobile games, including Hitman Sniper: The Shadows, Deus Ex Go, Battle Champions, and Space Invaders: Hidden Heroes will be shut down as of January 4. The studio also claimed that in-game purchases that players have already bought won't be refunded.
Although players can still use their previous purchases without any issues, new purchases can no longer be made. All of the aforementioned titles will be removed from their storefronts on December 1, followed by a closure on January 4. Players now have less than two months to experience four of these mobile games, as they won't be available to play soon. "Effective immediately, in-game purchases are stopped. We encourage prior in-game purchases to be used before January 4th, as they will not be refunded" the official announcement reads.
The closure of the former Square Enix Montreal games isn't exactly unexpected, given that Onoma Studios will shut down on November 24th. It is also uncertain whether other mobile games in Onoma's portfolio, such as Hitman Go and Lara Croft Go, will be affected by the closure. According to a report from Bloomberg's Jason Schreier, part of the studio members will move to Embracer Group's other internal studios to work on new projects, such as Deus Ex, Fable, and an unannounced IP which will be detailed soon.
Square Enix Montreal was acquired by Embracer Group in May, along with Eidos Montreal and Crystal Dynamics. The studio then announced last month that they would be rebranding to Onoma, a Greek name that represents their vision and identity. Shortly after the rebranding, Onoma Studios confirmed they would be shutting down, coming as a surprise to many.
The four Onoma games will stand among Scavengers, Babylon's Fall, Final Fantasy VII: The First Soldier, and Killzone Shadow Fall on the list of games that have recently been shut down. All mobile games that will be taken offline as of January 4 are Deus Ex Go, Battle Champions, Space Invaders: Hidden Heroes, and Hitman Sniper: The Shadows.
