Hajime Isayama recently revealed his inspirations for two iconic characters from Attack on Titan.
According to AnimeTV, Gabi was based on none other than Arya from HBO's brutal high fantasy series Game of Thrones. Falco, meanwhile, was inspired by Jesse from AMC's drug epic Breaking Bad.
Isayama's Attack on Titan manga appeared in Kodansha's Bessatsu Shōnen Magazine between September 2009 and April 2021. Set in a post-apocalyptic world where humans hide from the titular gigantic, man-eating monsters in walled-off cities, the story follows protagonist Eren Jaeger as he evolves from an angry hero with the goal of destroying all Titans to humanity's ultimate enemy.
Attack on Titan is one of Kodansha's most successful series. To date, over 120 million copies have been sold globally, making Isayama's story one of the best-selling manga in history, alongside Hirohiko Araki's JoJo's Bizarre Adventure and Tite Kubo's Bleach. Moreover, Attack on Titan won Best Shōnen Manga at the Kodansha Manga Awards in 2011 and at Saló del Manga de Barcelona in 2013.
Wit Studio (Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress) created the first three seasons of the anime adaptation with MAPPA (Campfire Cooking in Another World with My Absurd Skill) taking over for the final and final season. Attack on Titan: The Final Season - Part 1 premiered in December 2020 and Part 2 debuted in January 2022. Attack on Titan: The Final Season - Part 3 is slated for release sometime in 2023.
Like the manga series, the Attack on Titan anime has performed well with both critics and fans. It also has gone on to win multiple prestigious awards; for example, at this year's Crunchyroll Anime Awards, Attack on Titan: The Final Season - Part 1 won Anime of the Year, Best Antagonist and Best Opening Sequence.
Isayama recently shared his thoughts and feelings about the story's controversial ending. Speaking at a panel at Anime NYC, he explained he still has doubts about how he wrote the conclusion. "I still struggle on this point," Isayama stated. "I'm very sorry about that."
Isayama's Attack on Titan manga is distributed in North America by Kodansha USA. The three seasons of the anime adaptation by Wit Studio and the final season by MAPPA are available to stream on Crunchyroll.
