Touki Denshou Angel Eyes

Overview

Touki Denshou: Angel Eyes (loosely translated to "Battle Princess Legend: Angel Eyes") is a 2D fighting game developed and released by Tecmo for arcades exclusively in Japan in 1996.

A traditional fighting game by Tecmo (who would later publish the Dead or Alive series), Angel Eyes is an early example of a fighting game with a cutesy female-only roster (similar to Seifuku Densetsu: Pretty Fighter) and is the only commercially-released fighting game to include character sprites that are either hand-drawn graphics or pre-rendered 3D models (which are dependent on the character chosen).

The game was later ported to the Sony PlayStation by Graphic Research exclusively in Japan on December 11, 1997, adding several hidden characters. This version was later digitally re-released for the PlayStation Network (as a PSOne Classics title) exclusively in Japan on November 12, 2008.

An Arcade Archives version for PlayStation 4 and Switch was confirmed in September of 2020 but has not yet surfaced.

Characters

The game includes 8 playable characters and one unplayable boss. Unlike most other fighting games, the game's roster mixes together characters with two different types of sprites: hand-drawn sprites and pre-rendered 3D models.

All alternate versions made for the PS1 release must be unlocked beforehand.

  • Raiya (hand-drawn, has an evil "Black" version in the PS1 release)
  • Reika (pre-rendered, has a hand-drawn version in the PS1 release)
  • Highway Star (hand-drawn, has a "wounded" version in the PS1 release)
  • Kiriko (pre-rendered, has both hand-drawn and hand-drawn clone "Akane" versions in the PS1 release)
  • Lina (pre-rendered, has both hand-drawn and hand-drawn alt. outfit versions in the PS1 release)
  • Marie & King (hand-drawn, has an alternate "Marie & Panda" version in the PS1 release)
  • Chibiko (hand-drawn, has both "Robo" and "Binbou" versions in the PS1 release)
  • Mysterious Power (hand-drawn, has an alternate "Hyper" version in the PS1 release)
  • Angel (pre-rendered, unplayable final boss)
